Setting a path to net zero
As a business we are deeply concerned by the climate emergency and care strongly about the part we can play in improving it. We have set progressive net zero carbon targets for our business against a 2019 baseline, to ensure our direct operating emissions (scope 1 and 2) are net zero by 2025 and our wider indirect emissions (scope 3) are net zero by 2030. We have deliberately set stretching targets because, like many of our clients, we see it as our responsibility to be a leader in our sector and accelerate towards better environmental stewardship.
Our global commitments
CBRE recently signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment, a campaign led by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in partnership with the UN Global Compact and the We Mean Business coalition.
"CBRE has committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2025 and to transitioning its vehicle fleet to electric vehicles. "
This target covers GHG emissions from the company’s global operations and is aligned with the ambition of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. CBRE has committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity by 2025 and to transitioning its vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.
CBRE has also committed to an industry-leading target for emission reductions in the facilities and properties it manages around the world (Scope 3). CBRE will curb emissions in facilities it manages for occupiers worldwide by 79% per square foot by 2035. For properties it manages for investors worldwide, CBRE will reduce emissions 67% per sqm over the same timeframe. CBRE plans to achieve its Scope 3 target through partnership with its Global Workplace Solutions (GWS) and Property Management clients. The company manages nearly 650 million square meters of corporate facilities and commercial properties worldwide.
"CBRE will curb emissions in its sites it manages:
-79% for occupiers
-67% for investors"
As a part of its 2040 net-zero emissions strategy, CBRE also signed The Climate Pledge, a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon 10 years ahead of the goal stated in the Paris Agreement. The Climate Pledge, co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism, forms a cross-sector community of companies and organizations committed to net zero carbon by 2040, working together to take action to address the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy.
Our European commitments
In order to achieve this ambitious target as quickly as possible, our Advisory services in Europe are committed to be net-zero by 2030.
Example of local concrete actions
Through their program, The Real Impact Project, CBRE Netherlands has committed to reducing 25% of the total carbon emissions reduction target of commercial real estate in the Netherlands (approximately 1,000 kilotons of CO2) by 2030. To achieve this goal, CBRE Netherlands is integrating sustainability advice within each of their service lines in 2021 as well as monitoring, benchmarking and disclosing carbon reduction of every property serviced.
